Flood On 6th Day of CNY

Oh NO! Sibu flooded again and this time is on the 6th day of Chinese New Year! In fact, there were floods from the 1st day of CNY till today, but today one is the "highlight"!

Major roads were quite heavily flooded and caused serious traffic jam especially at Brooke Drive and Kampung Nyabor area. Luckily today is Saturday and some companies are off this day, otherwise the jam will be even worse!

[Some shops were flooded and couldn't do business]

As I told in the previous post titled "Oh No! Flood!", the major cause of frequent flooding in Sibu nowadays is the shallowed riverbed of Rejang river resulted from illegal logging upstream. The yellowish water covered the roads are from overflowed Rejang river. This is a fact!

[A view of Rejang river - main cause of frequent flooding in Sibu]

Yet, local politicians refused to believe the fact and don't want to open tender for riverbed clearing. Everytime when serious flood occur, they will tell the press that they already acquired millions worth of allocation and efforts will be taken to solve this problems.

[My former primary school will never escape from flood because of its geographical location]

However, not much improvement we can see until today. Yet, Sibu people need to bear the consequences of the shallowing riverbed of Rejang river. Can you imagine one day you drive out from your house, then when you are at a one-way road and you notice that the road is flooded but you can't make a u-turn back? Will you just stop your car or continue your journey? If you continue, you will be having risks such as missing car plate number or the worst case, your car engine died at the center of the flooded road!

[Flood in front of Sarawak House]

I guess those politicians never worry about this, because they are sitting in big car and staying in big house with the house compound properly cemented few inches above the road level. But do they ever think of those poorer facing the water overflowed into the house and caused furniture damage? Who gonna bear their loses? Come on!!!

[Flood at Foochow Lane - over the knee]

Flooding in Sibu is a very serious issue that all Sibu people are facing today. I know sometimes we cannot against mother nature, but I am sure some prevention can be carried out in short term to lower the frequency of flooding in Sibu such as proper drainage management and Rejang riverbed clearing thus give back the peaceful day to the people of Sibu!

Here are some random flooding photos to share:

CNY 09 Series - I Met Special Snacks

Yesterday evening Sparkish was kind enough to fetch me and Rojak Toh went visiting at another colleague's house.

Nothing much to share about the visiting but I found some snacks in my colleague's house were very unique and special which I hardly see in other houses that I had visited. That's why I snapped some photos about these very unique snacks which caught my attention. Well, may be some of you may not agree with me, but at least they were special for me. You can just treat me as a "Kampung boy's" talk if you like.

On top of the list, it is this vacuum-packed pork sausage. You ever eat this before? It tasted not bad. It's Singapore's product.

[Front view of vacuum-packed pork sausage]

Then, vacuum-packed BBQ dried-pork with cheese! I like cheese but never try eating dried-pork with cheese before. It tasted good!

Vacuum-packed BBQ dried-pork. Nothing much special actually but it is convenient because you don't need to spend time to cut big piece of dried-pork into small pieces before it is served. (At least my colleague said so ;p )

[Vacuum-packed Bak Kua]

Well-packed ready-to-eat kuaci. The packaging looked nice, but the kuaci inside not really tasty.

Various dried cuttlefish - My favorite!

[The red one look nice in color but not much taste]

Hershey's Kisses chocolate! Imported branded chocolate from USA, very thick chocolate taste! Yummy!

[Hershey's Kisses label]

[Hershey's Kisses chocolates - very yummy!]

Last but not least, these very mini and cute crispy sambal rolls! The size is just about 1/3 of crispy shredded pork that I made! It needs extra passion to do this!

Victor Grace Wedding On 3rd Day Of CNY @ Golden Happiness Restaurant

Attended one of my secondary school old time buddy's, Victor wedding lunch at Golden Happiness Restaurant yesterday, which was also the 3rd day of Chinese New Year.

[Outside view of Golden Happiness Restaurant]

Golden Happiness Restaurant is described by Sibu people as the best restaurant in town for various occasion especially for wedding banquet. That's why, in order to held wedding lunch or dinner at this restaurant, you need to book the place at least half a year to one year in advance especially during peak season.

[Table presentation - better than some hotels]

[A view inside the restaurant]

Victor was my classmate from Transition class to Form 5. We were having great time study in the same class as he always become the center of laughter for his "siao siao" and playful characteristic! He's a very smart person but his "craziness" sometimes caught us in shock! He was once glamor among the classmates for his Batman-style-upside-down-hanging-on-the-door and also Superman-running-on-corridor-edge stunts! Nowadays whenever we talk about Victor, these are the thing we never forget to mention about and became a good laughter among our gang!

I think this is what made Victor so special among our friends. A happy-go-lucky guy and not easy to get angry. You see, he even showed his clown-look on stage when everyone was preparing for "Yam Seng" session during his wedding lunch! He noticed that I was taking photo on him, that's why he showed me this face (as in photo below). I said that look more MONKEY than CLOWN! HAHA! The most not serious bridegroom I ever met!

[Gatcha MONKEY!!]

Yesterday Victor was wearing a neck tie with a lot of small froggies printed on it. I felt curious, thus I asked him, "Why froggies, Victor?". This is how he answered me, "Because I am prince of frog (青蛙王子) ma... ". HAHA! Very logic and good answer!! You win this time, Victor!

[Froggies neck tie]

Then, Victor was caught reading Keadilan Press (Gong Zheng Bao) at his wedding lunch! Hii Tiong Huat, Sibu maddest man somehow sneaked into the banquet and busy selling Keadilan Press from table to table. I was too busy with eating, that's why forgot to take a shot on him! As a bridegroom, Victor somehow got a copy of the press then started to read it instantly on his VIP table! Didn't I tell you he is the most not serious bridegroom I ever met?!

[Gatcha Victor!]

[The bridegroom continue reading his Gong Zheng Bao]

Victor's mother, Mdm. Yew was our Biology teacher in Form 4 & 5. She was a great teacher who was very serious and dedicated in her teaching, most-student-would-scare type. Yet outside the classroom, she is not scary at all! She is a very friendly person who even join us for laughter when we visited his son on Chinese New Year! So as his dad who like to join us laughing. Victor's elder brother, Vincent and younger sister, Caroline are equally friendly person as well! That made them a happy and fun family!

The wedding lunch was great in term of the foods as well as the time we have. This year we didn't do visiting, so this lunch gave us the chance for a small gathering among secondary school friends!

[The dishes - Left-bottom shows the most delicious shark fin soup among restaurants on town]

[Other dishes and desserts]

As his buddy, I truely happy for Victor and his family. Finally his family's dream came true and his dad need not nag us to introduce a girl to his son anymore! ;p I sincerely wish Victor and Grace have a Happily-ever-after marriage. We hope next year when they come back from New Zealand for Chinese New Year, they will bring back a small Victor or small Grace or both!

CNY 09 Series - First Day @ Sibu Airport

In my family, first thing we should do on Chinese New Year morning is eating "so mian" (Foochow slang) or "mee sua" (Hokkien slang) or string mee in chicken soup as it brings the meaning of longevity.

[Chicken soup "So mian"]

Then, I happened to go to Sibu airport on the first day of CNY. As expected, not many people were in the airport.

[A view at Sibu Airport on 1st day of CNY]

[Not many people at checking counter]

[A view outside departure hall]

However, still quite a lot of people either those working in peninsular Malaysia or study there were coming back on the first day of CNY.

[A view outside arrival hall]

Nothing much to write about Sibu airport, but I found this one quite interesting. I saw a super-duper sexy sport car in the airport! Sorry, I am not automobile fanatic, that's why I can't figure out what model of sports car is this. Maybe those know can tell me about it?

[I saw a sports car from far!]

It's not easy to see this kind of high class sports car in town especially in small town like Sibu. Waving road condition and curving roads make driving this kind of sports car a big challenge.

[The sports car was reversing and preparing to leave]

However, I salute this car owner as he dared to drive such a sexy car on Sibu road! I guess it must be belongs to a super-duper rich family because the car price itself is more expensive than a house which can be afforded by average families! Luckily I still able to grab the chance to take few snaps on this sports car to share with you all.
